Bio Norma Smayda learned to weave in Norway, later receiving her MFA in Visual Design from UMass-Dartmouth. She now teaches and exhibits widely from local guilds to Convergences, including many seminars at NEWS. In 1974 she established, and continues to run, the Saunderstown Weaving School. Scandinavian weaving, historic weaving, and weaving theory are special areas of expertise. She received the NEWS Weaver of Distinction Award, the Weavers’ Guild of Boston Distinguished Achievement Award and twice the HGA Award of Excellence.
