Weaver Rose: A New Look at a Vintage Weaver  (3 hours)

Norma Smayda

W.H.H. Rose was a well known 19th century weaver who cherished hundred of drafts inherited from his ancestors, created more and preserved them for posterity. This seminar will give an overview of the history of weaver Rose, including weavers leading up to his era and his legacy. He wove far more than overshot, for which he is best known. We will look at his threading for spot Bronson, M’s and O’s, huck, twill, summer and winter and overshot. Time will be spent analyzing his methods of writing drafts and translating them into drafts familiar to us.

 Drafting: Starting at Square One  ( 3 hours)

 Drafting is an essential weaving skill that often intimidates the beginning weaver. In addition to being a powerful design tool, drafting allows us to communicate with other weavers and to access a wealth of weaving references. This workshop covers structural, profile, and color-and-weave drafts. Students will learn to read, develop, and manipulate these drafts for designing their own weaving projects.

Designing Good Cloth  ( 3 hours) (CLOSED)

In this seminar, we will examine in detail the foundation of making good cloth: sett and warp density. Then we will take our knowledge and apply it to the design of an actual weaving project. You’ll leave the seminar with sketches and other information to make your new design a reality.

Laptops & Looms  ( 3 hours)

An overview of a methodical approach to designing with weave design software. After a brief review of the basics, topics to be covered are network drafting, designing for thick and thin yarns, parallel threadings, profile drafting and block substitution, interleaving, and polychrome design. All for weavers working with 4 to 8 shaft looms. Create designs you could never imagine when restricted to graph paper.

 Pin Loom Cozies  ( 3 hours)

Class Description: Learn how to weave on pin looms such as the Weave-it, or Weavette. Create a cozy for your cell phone or Ipod while learning joining and construction techniques for these addictive little handheld looms. Looms will be provided.

Colour Theory  ( 3 hours)  (CLOSED)

Margo Selby

A class designed to build confidence and understanding of colour, stripe, proportion and scale. In this class you will design a wide range of stripes which can later be developed into warp or weft ideas for woven fabric. A variety of different colour theories will be looked at including understanding the colour wheel, complimentary colours, harmonious palettes, ombre, strie, balance and proportion. Students will be encouraged to work with artists materials (paint, pastel, crayon)  combined with paper and yarn collage.

Artists materials: Pastels, paints, crayons, coloured Embroidery threads, coloured yarns, double sided selo-tape, sketchbook Coloured papers / magazines for collage.

 Magic in the Water  ( 3 hours)

Laura Fry

Lecture with woven samples. Once the threads have been interlaced, the weaver’s job is not quite done. In order to have “real” cloth, the web must now be wet finished. While all fibers should be wet finished, wool and hair fibers have the ability to “full” and the quality of the cloth can be subtly or dramatically changed by the degree of fulling applied. Laura will demonstrate what wet finishing is and how it is applied to the yarns weavers usually use. “It isn’t finished until it’s wet finished.” Laura will do a demonstration of fulling and cold mangling.

Summer and Winter  ( 3 hours)  (CLOSED)

This class will cover the principles of summer and winter. We shall discuss different treadling methods associated with this weave structure and the effect they have on the appearance of the cloth. In order to gain a clear understanding of how the tie-up is developed, each participant will create a profile draft and then work out the tie-up required to weave that design.

Bead Leno  ( 3 hours) (CLOSED)

Bead Leno is a loom controlled leno where the “bead” is a tool causing warp threads to twist. Through lecture, we will unlock the secrets and see the magic of weaving the leno patterns. This lacy weave is usually used for curtains and scarves. We will see that it can also be used in clothing. This class will also include the story of my journey to the HGA certificate of excellence and Master Weaver.

Photographing your Handwovens  ( 3 hours)

Have you ever emailed a photo of your latest handwoven creation and been disappointed in how “blah” it looked? Do you despair of writing a blog or creating a website because you can’t seem to get good photos of your work? Do you hesitate to enter juried shows because your pictures don’t do your work justice?

These days, it’s more important than ever to create compelling photographic images.  The good news is that it’s not that difficult, and you don’t need a professional photo studio to do it. In this class, you’ll learn what equipment you need, as well as simple tips and tricks that will make your images stand out.

 Rag Rug Weaving  ( 3 hours)

Rag Rug weaving is the ultimate recycling adventure! In this class, we will learn all the ins and outs of turning those old and unwanted clothes into fabulous rugs. We will begin by talking about setting up your warp and learning how to dissect clothes and prepare them for your weft. We will discuss many different design possibilities and look at lots and lots of samples. This class will also cover different looms and what makes them better or worse for weaving rugs. You will leave plenty of inspiration and information to get started on making great rag rugs.

Color!  ( 3 hours)

Color can be so much of what we do as weavers, and yet, so many of us are scared by it or don’t even know how to start choosing. This class will start with Dena talking about her own personal color journey…going from feeling like she had no idea about how to match colors, to being a professional weaver, known best for the complexity and beauty of her color choices.  While we will talk some about the science of color, why colors do what they do and why we see what we see, this is not a color theory class. It is a class to inspire and empower you.  Dena will present some simple exercises to get your creativity flowing and help you be bolder with your choices. We will finish with a discussion of your own personal color journey.

 Four-Shaft Overshot  ( 3 hours)  (CLOSED)

Gain an understanding of overshot. In this class you will learn about the relationship between the basic 2/2 twill structure and overshot. Discussion will include the motifs commonly associated with overshot; an explanation for deriving the star treadling (that is, an as-drawn-in treadling sequence based on twill pairs); and other treadling and tie-up possibilities. We shall analyze turning points in the treadling to understand the impact they have on tabby order and the appearance of the cloth. We shall discuss the emboldening tabby order and ways in which to manage the shuttles and selvedges. Yarns and setts will also be discussed. Learn how to add vertical stripes or areas of additional interest by using eight shafts. If time permits, we will go through the steps of creating one’s own overshot design.

 The Efficient Weaver  ( 3 hours)  (CLOSED)

Lecture with demonstration of dressing a loom. Laura will share hints and tips for how to work more efficiently. She will dress a loom beginning with winding a warp, beaming, and threading, explaining why she does it the way she does. Then she will weave on it showing shuttle handling/throwing. Laura threads the way Norman Kennedy teaches, and says it can be so much faster. Students may take photographs or make video recordings of the session. Learn Laura’s meticulous approach to weaving quality fabrics.

Fiber Jewelry  ( 3 hours) (CLOSED)

This is a hands-on class in fiber jewelry. You will make cloth beads to match your outfit, beaded wire pendants, as well as other fiber jewelry pieces. All supplies will be furnished however, if you would like your own colors you will need to bring small samples of handwoven cloth.

 Multi-Shaft Huck Lace (Eight-Shafts or More)  ( 3 hours)  (CLOSED)

Is huck lace a unit or non-unit weave? What is a unit weave? Is it important to know the answers to these questions in order to design and work in this structure? These questions will be the springboard into our discussion of huck lace. The goal of this class is to share with participants the principles of this structure so that they can work successfully and with confidence in creating their own designs. The discussion will include ideal sleying arrangings in the reed and a brief discussion of how huck lace, Bronson lace, spot Bronson and Swedish lace differ from one another both visually and structurally.

Using Weaving Software   ( 3 hours) (CLOSED)

All weaving software will get you to similar places in terms of design, drafting, weave structure and color. We will explore WeavePoint as an example of weaving software and work through its many facets. Everything in this program can be achieved in other programs; it is simply the one this instructor uses and knows best! The class will be focused on post-beginning weavers who have some knowledge of weave structures, but who have not been using weaving software up until now. Students may want to download the WeavePoint demo program on their own laptops, but the entire presentation will utilize a digital projector, so no specialized equipment is required. Following the presentation, if time allows, there will be an optional field trip to the Webs booth at the commercial exhibit for a demonstration of WeavePoint in action on a Toika computer assist loom.

Iridescent Weaving: Creating Cloth which Changes Color as it Moves  ( 3 hours)  (CLOSED)

Do you want to move beyond your comfort zone colors and add a little zing to your weaving? This workshop will explore the factors which help some textiles shimmer and appear to change color: hue, value, size of threads, fiber content, luster, weave structure, sett, drape, finishing, and more.

Weaving Methods  ( 3 hours)  (CLOSED)

This content-filled class covers a wide range of useful weaving information including several tips for getting better selvedges; tying on with even tension; closing up spaces at the beginning of the warp quickly and forcing the edges to lie flat; adding a couple of picks of a different yarn without the usual tail buildup at the selvedges; winding multiple strands with a paddle or one’s hand; choosing a sett suitable for the yarns and structure; determining a yarn’s yards per pound and size using a homemade yarn balance; understanding cloth analysis and much more.

 Near History: Weaving from 1876 to 1976  ( 3 hours)

The need to weave fabric for household textiles and/or clothing virtually disappeared in the 1850’2 as machine-made textiles became affordable and abundant and handweaving was forgotten. The Centennial of 1876, the Arts and Crafts movement and the Colonial Revival era caused a revival of weaving, but as a craft, not a skilled occupation. This seminar discusses the movements that influenced the resurgence of weaving and the names and stores associated with early 20th century weaving: William Morris, Mary Meigs Atwater, Laura Allen, Marguerite Porter Davison, Bertha Frey, Annie Albers and Dorothy Liebes, among others.

Warping the loom back to front by yourself  ( 3 hours)  (CLOSED)

The most common complaint among beginning weavers is that they are not happy with the way they have learned to dress the loom. Some find it too complex; some find it way too time consuming; some have tension issues once they start to weave. Dressing the loom should be almost as satisfying as the weaving itself. If you’ve fallen victim to any of these, or other problems, come to the warping the loom demonstration and see how easy it actually can be. Although we will start with a pre-wound warp, there should be plenty of time for a warp-winding demo as well. There will be handouts.

Guided Tour of the Gallery Show  ( 3 hours)

This in-depth tour of the NEWS Juried Gallery Exhibit will be led by one of its judges. These beautiful weavings will serve as a jumping-off point for our own dialogue about what makes good cloth. Our discussion will aim to gain a deeper appreciation of successful weaving, considering such elements as concept, unity, structure, color, pattern and fiber.

Guided Tour of the Fashion Show  ( 3 hours)

See the Fashion Show through the eyes of the jurist.  After enjoying the presentation of the garments on the runway, see them up close when you take this informative tour of the garments on display.  Experience a technical critique of design, fiber choice, construction techniques, and finishing touches used by experienced fiber artists.

Tablet Weaving: Double Faced Designs (One day)

In this workshop you will learn to produce double faced patterns for tablet weaving. This technique is used to create figures and letters on tablet woven bands. We will start by setting up using the circular warping technique. We will discuss the double faced weaving technique using two packs of cards. No previous tablet weaving experience necessary, but concentration is required.

Equipment Modification Techniques: Ideas and Possibilities for Handweavers (One day)

“It is up to individual weavers to question each part on the loom in their search for a personal approach to weaving. Every item, with the possible exception of the side frames can be altered or removed to dramatic effect” – Ann Sutton

Understanding the equipment we use, as weavers, is the first step to changing the way we use it. Equipment and materials are both tools that weavers can modify to create new designs in their textiles. We will explore reeds, beaters, and heddles as the areas we can modify to transform the expected outcome of a weave structure. We will complete our explorations by removing our samples, finishing (if necessary) and follow-up discussion.

In this day-long workshop, weavers will have an opportunity to work each of these modifications with new tools, and both traditional and unusual materials. You will go home with an exciting sample book, reference materials, and ideas ready to start your next series of weaving projects!

Ply-Split Baskets (One day)

In Ply-Splitting, the plies of one cord are split apart to create a “shed” and another cord is pulled through as “weft.” Ply-splitting, or ply-split braiding as it is also known, was traditionally used to make camel girths and other tack for pack animals. Today’s textile artists are using these techniques for jewelry, baskets, wall hangings, sculpture and more. Learn the basics of this portable and versatile craft as you create a small basket, vessel, or other 3-dimensional form.

 Tablet Weaving: Ram’s Horn and its relatives (One day)    (CLOSED)

Ram’s Horn is a popular beginner’s pattern that has lots of variations within. Learn how to read a draft, setup the cards, and weave this beautiful pattern. With a few changes to turning, learn several of the variations to the Ram’s Horn pattern like Ivy and Running Dog. No previous tablet weaving experience required.

Weaving at Warp Speed (One day)

This workshop is appropriate for anyone who wants to pick up a little speed in their weaving…whether to be able to make more great weavings in less time, or to become a production weaver.  In the morning, Dena will present “Ten (relatively) Easy Ways To Weave Faster” where we’ll talk about some of the most common things that slow us down and how to overcome them.  In the afternoon, we will take an in depth look at three aspects of the weaving process. First is equipment…what makes looms better or worse for speed, and what accessories can best support your weaving. Second is body mechanics; the nuts and bolts of the weaving process. Third is treadling sequences and hints for how to adjust your treadling for ease and speed while weaving complex patterns.

 Eco-Dyeing with Greener Shades Dyes

Greener Shades Dyes contain no heavy metals making them the choice for concerned crafters dyeing protein fibers. We will lightly cover the make-up of dyes and protein fibers, as well as color wheel theory. Students are asked to bring wool and silk skeins and short warps to dye using several techniques such as full immersion, tie and dye, painting, blending, color mixing, and more.

18th and 19th Century Handwoven Fashions for the Home and Body (Two days)

Presenting a round-robin journey through the 18th and 19th century handwoven textile world with drafts from the everyday through British “high fashion”- for the middle class.  Participants will weave samples of many once used but now most often ignored weave structures. Drafts will be taken from published and manuscript sources and existing textiles and will include, among others: log cabin, crossbar, spot, dumb flowers, flushing variations including damboard, Armenia net, and gebrochene.

Participants are asked to bring a warped loom to class with at least the participant’s own sample woven. Drafts will be sent in advance to facilitate this. Class time will alternate between weaving and talking about the weave structures, their uses then, and how to adapt the weaves for today.

Looms, in good working order, of two to however many shafts are available are suitable for this class.

 Freedom of Expression: Painting Warps on Loom (Two days)  (CLOSED)

In this dyeing and weaving workshop, we will have lots of spontaneous fun painting warps with fiber reactive dyes, after the loom is warped. This wonderful technique allows weavers to work with color and pattern in a loose, free, expressive way, creating large-scale abstract forms and opens the door to a variety of surface pattern techniques, including stamping and stenciling. We will paint enough warp to explore the possibilities of the technique, and for a scarf. We will learn how to mix our own colors working from primary colors/hues. Participants bring pre-warped table or floor looms to the workshop.

Crimp and Create (Two days)

This is an on-loom workshop taking fiber in a new direction by creating “crimp cloth.” Using a variation of woven shibori for both warp and weft, learn to create fabric with permanently crimped designs that hold their memory even when washed. Participants will draft, weave, and crimp their samples in class to discover the endless possibilities. Learn how the fabric can be used for entire garments as well as for permanent pleating to replace knitted ribbing for a sweater or to add a knit look to the collar area of a jacket. Sewing tips for using this amazing cloth will be included. No dyeing involved.

 Frame Loom Tapestry Weaving (Two days)  (CLOSED)

Tapestries can be woven on any loom, and frame looms have the advantage of being inexpensive and portable. Basic tapestry techniques will be introduced on Day 1, then students will design and begin weaving a tapestry inspired by a name.

Colour and Texture in Weaving  (Two days)  (CLOSED)

A workshop designed to build confidence and freedom when working on the loom to mix fibres and colours boldly together to create contemporary and innovative fabrics which are unconventional and spirited.  This is a 2 day workshop in which a personal approach to colour and texture will be explored with structure and theory guidance. The workshop is suitable for all levels of weaver from beginners through to advanced weavers who may want to look at their work with a fresh approach.

Please bring your own selection of coloured and textured weft yarns to use along-side Margo’s unusual and experimental fibres, scissors, shuttles

 Beyond Beginning (2 1/2 days)  (CLOSED)

This class is designed to give the beginning weaver the knowledge and confidence to design their own projects. This will be a “hands-on” workshop that explores many popular weave structures in order to understand how they work and the possibilities they offer. Students will examine weaves, including twills, overshot, and lace and unit weaves, looking at the basics of these structures while also considering setts and suitable fiber choices. In addition, technical considerations will be discussed such as working with two shuttles, achieving good selvedges and making sure designs and drafts are balanced.

Each student will bring a 4 or 8 harness loom pre-threaded according to instructions that will be sent to registered students. Everyone will leave with a notebook of samples and handouts and many new directions to follow!

 Exploring Rep Weave and related warp faced weaves (2 1/2 days)

Gain an understanding of the technique and applications of Rep Weave through lecture, discussion and weaving samples. Drafting, block designs for 4 to 8 harness and Rep pick up technique will be discussed as well as color interactions.

Every loom will be set up in advance with a different draft, sett, fiber and technique (received a month earlier). Each participant will have a chance to work at all the looms and will go home with a complete portfolio full of samples, drafts and many genuine rep weave projects.

 A Weaver’s Dozen (2 1/2 days)  (CLOSED)

Explore some hard to pronounce and difficult to define weaves such as turned taqueté, samitum, diversified plain weave, lampas, and deflected double weave. Or, perhaps profile drafting, double two-tied threadings, and block substitution intrigues you. A Weaver’s Dozen is a fast-paced, round-robin style workshop where the number of weaves accomplished is limited solely by the number of participants and looms available. Primarily geared toward 8-shaft weaving, but some 4-shaft weaves are explored and such looms can be accommodated. There is some lecture time, but the emphasis is on weaving.

 Classic Crackle and More (2 1/2 days)

Crackle weave is a surprisingly versatile weave with exciting design potential on just four shafts. This workshop covers the essentials of drafting and designing in the classic crackle weave, with consideration of design elements of proportion, color, value, and texture. On-loom exercises ensure a thorough understanding of classic crackle weave. In addition, we will explore the many variations possible by treadling crackle in the manner of other weaves, e.g. summer and winter or Bronson lace, and by using special treadlings, e.g. polychrome or boundweave. Your sampler will include at least twelve distinctly different fabrics, all on a crackle threading. Comprehensive instruction in multi-shaft crackle is included in the 3-day workshop.

Mystery Weave, Deflected Double Weave, Cell Weave – it has as many names as it does possibilities. In this workshop we explore the dramatic possibilities of deflected doubleweave.  We will begin class with a powerpoint presentation that gives a detailed explanation of the structure with slides, drafts and many examples. Next we will experiment with the myriad variations possible on a single threading by changing our tie-up, treadling and weft colors to create a mini sampler. Finally we will choose a tie-up/treadling/colorway from our sampler to weave a scarf.

This lively and intensive course is designed as an introduction to the basic techniques of weaving: winding a warp, dressing the loom and weaving a finished piece. The focus will be on exploring the basic weave structures – plain weave and twills in their many variations – designing and drafting a project and calculating yarn requirements. You will also learn about looms and equipment, yarns and finishing techniques. In addition, you will be able to take full advantage of NEWS: attending general lectures and exhibits while meeting other weavers. After completing the workshop, you will be able to warp a loom, weave on your own and know where help is readily available. Looms are provided.
